Latest DTV Visa Changes From 31 August 2026
Thailand introduced new supporting document requirements for DTV applications from 31 August 2026.
Applicants must now provide:
- Proof of permanent residence in the country where the DTV application is submitted
- Criminal record clearance certificate issued by the applicant’s country of nationality or the country where they have permanent residence, depending on the requirements of the Thai embassy or consulate
These documents are required in addition to the existing DTV requirements. The exact documents accepted can vary between Thai embassies and consulates.
This means you should no longer assume that you can simply travel to a neighbouring country such as Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia or Vietnam and apply for a DTV while staying there as a tourist.

New DTV Visa Requirements From 31 August 2026
1. Proof of Permanent Residence
You must provide proof of your permanent residence in the country where you submit your DTV application.
Simply being physically present in another country is no longer enough. A tourist visa, visa exemption, hotel booking or short-term stay does not automatically establish the required residence status.
The exact document accepted depends on the Thai embassy or consulate processing your application.
2. Criminal Record Clearance
A criminal record clearance certificate is now a mandatory supporting document for DTV applications.
The exact type of certificate and how recently it must have been issued can depend on the Thai embassy or consulate where you apply.
For example, the Royal Thai Embassy in London currently requires a police clearance certificate issued within six months of the application.
Having a criminal record does not necessarily mean that a DTV application will automatically be rejected. The final decision remains with the relevant Thai embassy or consulate, which may request additional information or documents.
Can You Still Apply for a DTV in a Neighbouring Country?
This is one of the biggest changes for foreigners currently living in Thailand.
Previously, some applicants living in Thailand travelled to countries such as Laos, Vietnam or Malaysia to submit a DTV application.
From 31 August 2026, you should not assume that this is possible if you are only visiting the country temporarily.
You will generally need to meet the nationality or permanent residence requirements of the Thai embassy or consulate where you apply.
Before travelling to another country for a DTV application, check the current requirements of the specific Thai embassy or consulate.
DTV Financial Requirement
The financial requirement remains at least 500,000 THB or the equivalent amount in another currency.
Applicants may need to provide bank statements or other acceptable evidence showing that they have sufficient funds.
The exact format and period of financial evidence can vary between Thai embassies and consulates.
Other DTV Documents
The new requirements do not replace the other DTV documents. Applicants may still need to provide documents such as:
- Passport biodata page
- Recent passport photograph
- Proof of the purpose of the DTV application
- Financial evidence
- Proof of permanent residence
- Criminal record clearance certificate
- Employment or freelance documentation, where applicable
- Documents supporting qualifying Thai soft power activities, where applicable

Can You Apply for a DTV While Living in Thailand?
You cannot apply for a DTV from inside Thailand simply because you are currently living here.
If you are currently in Thailand and want to apply for a DTV, you will normally need to leave Thailand and apply through a Thai embassy or consulate where you meet the current application requirements.
